Imagine No Malaria

What it is:

The United Methodist Church, the United Nations Foundation and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation have partnered to support Imagine No Malaria, providing mosquito nets, malaria treatment, education, communications and advocacy in Africa. In 2012, malaria claimed a life every 60 seconds. Malaria is 100% preventable, treatable and beatable.

Global efforts to fight malaria have brought tremendous progress over the past decade, reducing mortality rates by 49% and infection rates by 31% in Africa alone. But there is still more work to be done to prevent the deaths of approximately 627,000 people per year (World Malaria Report 2013, published by the World Health Organization).

INMimageEvery day, Imagine No Malaria is distributing bed nets, training community health workers to educate people in rural villages, stocking hospital and clinic shelves with effective medications, and developing radio programs to get the word out so that communities across Africa can experience health and healing in Christ's name. Together, we are saving millions of lives and making progress toward our goal of ending preventable deaths from malaria in Africa.

Imagine No Malaria consists of a comprehensive, holistic approach to fighting malaria, building on the work of Prevention begun with Nothing But Nets, and adding to it with programs in Education, Treatment and Communication. This multi-pronged approach revilalizes and strengthens the public health infrastructure. Addressing infrastructure and building capacity on the ground ensures that projects have the local support they need to be sustainable and successful over the long term. And it offers opportunities for people who often have limited access to formal education to receive training as Community Health Volunteers, which gives them a significant leadership role and a sense that they have the power to help bring positive change to their families and communities.

This comprehensive approach is not only saving lives every day, it is also transforming individuals, families, communities and nations as they experience hope in the possibility of a more abundant life for themselves and for future generations.
